Has Singularity arrived early?
TECHNOLOGY 4 April 2025 - An AI model has reportedly passed the Turing Test, a feat of ingenuity not expected, at least according to Google Chief Engineer Ray Kurzweil, until 2045, when it was expected that AI would match or exceed human intelligence and, in essence, appear indistinguishable from human consciousness. In a study awaiting peer review, researchers report that in a three-party version of the Turing test, in which participants chat with a human and an AI at the same time and then evaluate which is which, OpenAI's GPT-4.5 model was deemed to be the human 73 percent of the time when it was instructed to adopt a persona. That's significantly higher than random chance, suggesting that the Turing test has resoundingly been beaten. The most catastrophic predictions warn that uncontrolled superintelligence could trigger the Singularity, potentially leading to human extinction or the complete loss of control over technological systems. Before that point, AI capable of human-like interaction (passing the Turing Test) will cause mass unemployment, enable social and political manipulation, escalate fraud, erode democracy and individual autonomy. Additional major risks include uncontrollable autonomous weaponry and the fundamental difficulty of ensuring advanced AI goals align with human values. https://futurism.com/ai-model-turing-test
