65 million years ago an asteroid hit Earth at the site of the Yucatán peninsula, off the coast of Mexico, extinguishing 75% of life on Earth.  The probability of a similar event is measured by impact and timeline.  Other cosmic threats include high energy solar flares, solar expansion, gamma bursts, and supernovae such as Betelgeuse.
